Obituary for Gary Dean Powell

Gary D. Powell, age 75, loving husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away March 12 at Exempla Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado. He passed peacefully with his family at his side.

Gary was born in Moline, IL. He graduated from Rockridge High School in Edgington, IL in 1961. He received a BS degree from Colorado State University in 1966 then completed 3 years of graduate studies in 1972 at the University of Illinois Champain-Urbana, in Landscape architecture. He became a certified member of the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1991.

He married Susan Wilcox of Denver in 1964. They had 2 daughters, Renee (Tracy) French of Conifer, 1967 and Kristin Powell of Aurora, 1972. He lived in Broomfield continuously from 1974 through 2018.
He loved his work and retired from Powell-Tyler Partnership in 2008. He also loved collecting and training bonsai trees, camping, hunting, and fishing. His true love was his workshop where he built wooden canoes up to his last days.

He is survived by his wife Susan; two daughters, Renee (Tracy) French of Conifer and Kristin Powell of Aurora; two granddaughters Madison Gross of Ft. Collins, Colorado and Ryley Gross of Henderson, Colorado; and his sister Vicki Kaplan of Lafayette, Colorado; plus one niece and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Roscoe Powell, his mother Betty June Mueller, and his sister Tia Grohne.
